energiekonsens honors Karin Lang with climate protection award

The non-profit climate protection agency energiekonsens has awarded this year's climate protection prize to Karin Lang, Managing Director of Bremen-based honey and sweetener producer Sonnentracht. In doing so, the agency honors her long-standing and particularly dedicated commitment to climate-friendly entrepreneurship.

"I am very pleased that my work and commitment are being honored with the Climate Protection Award. It makes me really beam inside," Lang said when the award was presented on Monday. "But of course I do not do all this work alone, I'm part of a team. That's why my thanks also go to the employees from the countries of origin of our raw materials, from transport and production. Because the heartfelt desire of all of us is to become even better at climate protection." "Ms. Lang has firmly anchored the pursuit of greater climate protection in her actions," said Martin Grocholl, managing director of energiekonsens. "For years now, she has been driving Sonnentracht's sustainable orientation in many areas and levels of the company and is always open to further ideas, measures and projects. This makes her a role model in climate protection."

Solar power from the roof, organic vegetarian food in the canteen

For example, the company's production is climate-neutral thanks to the use of green electricity and its own photovoltaic system, it offers its employees vegetarian meals in its organic canteen, and it tries to make its packaging as sustainable as possible. In addition, Sonnentracht is currently involved in no less than three energiekonsens projects. In the network format "Effizienztisch Kompakt" (Compact Efficiency Table), the company is pursuing a joint CO2 savings target with seven other participants, and in the project "Kooperation CO2" (CO2 Cooperation), it aims to work together with companies from the neighborhood to make mobility more sustainable. To make it easier for employees to adopt climate-friendly behavior, Sonnentracht has also taken part in the "Green Nudging" project.

Every year since 2005, energiekonsens has awarded prizes to committed people from the state of Bremen who have made particularly remarkable and innovative contributions to climate protection. Since then, every year a climate protector is honored for his or her great personal commitment and trend-setting achievements in climate protection. The award winners to date come from a variety of social backgrounds and include representatives from business, associations and science.

New product line: baking ingredients, baking decoration, binding & gelling agents & desserts

After months of tinkering, developing, testing and tasting, we are finally pleased to present our new range. With our new baking assortment we expand our product range by about 70 new products from different areas. From the classic baking ingredients to baking decorations, flavored oils and waters, desserts as well as binding and gelling agents, many new products found their place with us. Inspired by our existing assortment, we thought it was time to use our know-how to expand our sweet baking helpers with a comprehensive baking assortment that leaves nothing to be desired. So we set to work and tinkered for all we were worth. Because if there's one thing that's important to us, it's the fact that our products come from our own company. For months, recipes were developed and tested, thrown over again and refined until we were sure that you would like them as much as we do. With a lot of attention to detail, products were created that not only taste good, but are also packaged plastic-free. With our paper bags we want to do something good for the environment, that's why we abstain plastic and aluminum wherever possible.

"Green Nudging" project

Through the processing and distribution of natural sweeteners, we at Sonnentracht depend on an intact environment. That is why we are committed to energy efficiency and climate protection. For this reason we have decided to participate in the pilot phase of the Green Nudging project.

"Nudging" is intended to promote climate-friendly behavior by employees in companies through small nudges, without the use of prohibitions or financial incentives. At our company, we have developed and implemented three nudges that have had a positive impact on waste separation throughout the company, on the consumption of paper and printer cartridges, and on energy consumption at the printing presses. Through employee training and the use of visually striking and appealing reminders to turn off the machines, electricity and solvent consumption was reduced at the printing presses.

Green Nudging is a joint project led by the non-profit climate protection agency energiekonsens and the project partners ConPolicy - Institute for Consumer Policy in Berlin, the Climate Protection and Energy Consulting Agency Heidelberg - Rhine-Neckar District (KliBA) and the Saxon Energy Agency (SAENA). Green Nudging is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative (NKI). If you are interested in climate protection and want to know more about the concept of Green Nudging, you can find out more about the project at www.green-nudging.de. On the website you can also find the Nudge catalog, which contains a variety of the nudges from the pilot phase.

Finalist for the Bremen Environmental Award

Since 2003, the Environmental Award has been presented in Bremen on the initiative of the Environmental Department to companies that operate responsibly and conserve resources or stand out with innovative environmental ideas. We, at Sonnentracht, applied with our free vegetarian wholefood kitchen and were nominated with five other companies from Bremen for the final. The certificate for "Finalist" was handed over by the Senator for Climate Protection and Environment Dr. Maike Schäfer and the Managing Director of BAB Ralf Stapp.

Everyone for climate protection

On 20.09.2019, Fridays for Future called for a global climate strike. In Bremen, around 30,000 people demonstrated for a better climate policy. We from Sonnentracht attach great importance to sustainability and were therefore also present in Bremen. We perceived the demonstration as very peaceful and were impressed by the many different generations that participated and got involved.

Bio-Brotbox promotion 2019

That's the Bio-Brotbox:

Already more than 180,000 girls and boys, and thus about a quarter of all first-graders in Germany, receive the well-filled Bio-Brotbox at the start of the new school year. The initiative for a healthy break-time breakfast has been around since 2002 and has since been supported by more and more volunteers and companies. They all want to achieve that...

  • ...every child gets a breakfast every day
  • ...this breakfast is healthy
  • ...children become aware of the value and origin of foods.

We switch to R-PET

We are gradually converting our dispenser bottle bodies to environmentally friendly R-PET (100% recycled plastic from beverage bottles).

This means that 66% of our product packaging consists of raw materials that are already in the recycling loop and do not need to be taken from the environment again. To increase the recyclability of our bottles, we are also replacing our silicone valve with a floating silicone valve. This way, we make the work of the recycling plants easier.

We are a climate protection company!

We were awarded as a climate protection company!

"Since we work with natural products, it is important to us to burden our environment as little as possible with our activities. Therefore, we have consistently reduced our energy and water consumption over the past three years. This not only has a positive effect on our environmental balance, but also reduces our operating costs," explains Karin Lang, operations manager at Sonnentracht GmbH.

Dr. Joachim Lohse, Bremen's Senator for Environment, Construction and Transport, personally saw the measures for himself at our summer party and praised them: "Sonnentracht is an example of responsible and environmentally friendly management. With its holistic approach, the company not only makes a valuable contribution in the area of climate protection, but also uses the EcoStep management system to reduce all environmental impacts along the entire value chain. Sonnentracht has reduced its CO2 emissions by more than 70 percent."

Those who are climate protection companies have demonstrably reduced their CO2 emissions by more than 20 percent within the last five years. By implementing a wide range of measures, we have not only been able to achieve this goal, we have exceeded it.
